There are several reasons that we may be called upon to install new grill cloth. Because grill cloth deteriorates over time, it may need to be replaced. Grill cloth may also need to be replaced when it has been damaged due to water, smoke, accidental tearing, etc. Sometimes it is desirable to change grill cloth when the decor of your sanctuary or
facility has been updated. And of course in the case of new construction, or new organ installations, we will install the appropriate type of grill cloth.
It is important to be aware of the purpose of the grill cloth in your room. Some cloths are designed to absorb sound, while others, such as the grill cloth in organ facades or speakers, are designed to allow the sound to pass through unaltered. For this reason, for musical installations it is always best to have your grill cloth replaced by an expert in this area.
A.E. Schlueter Pipe Organ Company has the equipment, knowledge and experience required to safely and expertly remove old grill cloth and install new grill cloth. We have worked on projects requiring 45' tall scaffolding. No project is too large or too small.
The first two photos to the right were taken at Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile Alabama. After water damage due to a hurricane, we removed their pipe facade, cleaned the pipes, removed the old grill cloth, which was a light color, and replaced it with a black grill cloth that really accented the beautiful pipe facade. We were also contracted to replace the cloth covering their enormous speaker
pod, which is a tiered octagon in the center of the ceiling. One year later after more water damage from another hurricane we were called in to replace the cloth covering on the speaker pod a second time.
The third and fourth photos to the right were taken at Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg, Florida. These photos show the façade before the grill cloth was replaced, and after the replacement.
Notice the difference in appearance that the black grill cloth makes.
It is not unusual after a grill cloth replacement, particularly when we replace a light-colored cloth with black cloth, to have members of the congregation remark on how much they like the “new” façade pipes. They often believe that the pipe configuration has changed because it looks so different, with the pipes sharply contrasted against the black grill cloth. Only a photo taken before the change will convince them otherwise!
